Most Goldendoodle owners have the best intentions when it comes to feeding their pup — but a few common mistakes can make a big difference in your dog’s energy, coat, digestion, and overall happiness. After raising hundreds of Goldendoodles here at Matthews Legacy Farm, here’s exactly what we share with every single family who takes home one of our pups.
What to Feed Your Goldendoodle
The first ingredient on the bag tells you everything. If it’s not a real, named protein like chicken, beef, or salmon…put it back on the shelf.
Here’s what to look for:
• Real meat as the first ingredient. Chicken, beef, or salmon should always be #1. Avoid “meat meal” or “animal by-products” — these are low-quality protein sources your pup doesn’t need.
• No corn, wheat, or soy fillers. These cheap fillers are hard to digest and can cause skin irritation, excessive shedding, and upset stomachs in Goldendoodles.
• Large breed puppy formula for standard Goldendoodles. This controls calcium and phosphorus levels for healthy bone and joint development — especially important in those fast-growing first months.
We don’t just recommend this, we use it ourselves on every dog at Matthews Legacy Farm. It’s made a noticeable difference in coat, energy, and digestion. You can find it here.
How much to feed your Goldendoodle
Portion size matters more than most people realize. Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes new puppy owners make. Here’s a simple guide:
• 8–12 weeks: 3 small meals a day
• 3–6 months: 2–3 meals a day
• 6 months+: 2 meals a day
Always follow the packaging guidelines and adjust based on your pup’s weight and activity level. When in doubt, ask your vet!
Don’t Skip the Probiotic
This is the one tip most owners skip and it makes a huge difference. Goldendoodles have sensitive stomachs, and the transition to a new home means a new environment, new food, and a new routine all at once. That’s a lot for a tiny tummy to handle.
Probiotics support healthy digestion, reduce gas and loose stools, and help your puppy settle in faster. Start them on day one!

Feeding your Goldendoodle well doesn’t have to be complicated. Choose a quality kibble with real meat first, feed the right portions for their age, and add a probiotic from day one. These three simple habits set your pup up for a long, healthy, happy life.
